Sports take centre stage

MAY is an extremely sporting month in Adeje this year, with events in a variety of disciplines taking place every weekend, free and open to the public.

Last week, in the Las Torres pavilion, the borough entertained the top European wheelchair basketball teams in the European Champions Cup, with Club Deportivo Ilunion de Madrid beating Italians Briantea Cantú in the final, watched by hundreds of fans.

The same sports centre also hosted the Spanish National Badminton Championships the previous Monday.

And for gymnasts, there was the Cabildo de Tenerife games, organised by Costa Adeje International School, in collaboration with Adeje Council and Tenerife Gymnastic Federation.

“It’s no coincidence that all of these sporting events are taking place in Adeje,” said Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera.

“An ideal way of encouraging young people to practise sports in Adeje is to show them, and invite them to watch national and international competitions here in the borough, to give them extra motivation.”

He added: “It is also, in parallel, an excellent, additional attraction for our visitors and tourists.”

Today (Friday) and tomorrow, the roads will be taken over by the Adeje Rally, which forms part of the national rallying competition.

It will be run throughout the borough, with the final presentations in the town’s Plaza de España tomorrow (Saturday).

The following Saturday (20th May) features open-sea swimmers, competing in the annual sea swim, Travesía a Nado Costa Adeje.

“With an increasing number of athletes from overseas taking part, this event is now considered one of the top swims in Tenerife,” said the Sports Councillor.

And on the weekend of 27th-28th May, there will be a European Fitness Championship taking place in Siam Mall, with over 150 participants from many different countries taking part.
