Splashing time in the City of Water

Travel 1By Vanessa Vee

I LOVE seeking out new direct destinations to travel to from Tenerife, and this week I’m taking a brief look at beautiful, beautiful Venice. Flying direct from here, it has to be done!

Venice is, perhaps, one of the most famous and most beautiful cities in Italy. And every year, millions of tourists come to walk the narrow streets on the “city on water”, take boat rides along the canals and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

With the large number of visitors, you’d think Venice is all but relaxed. But you’d be surprised to find just how easy it is to get away from the busy areas and be alone in a neighbourhood, the only sound being the water smashing against the boats on the canal.

Discovering this wonderful city is a must – and the earlier, the better, in my opinion. The streets are quieter before 10am, and, in summer time, the weather is still mild and nice.

Eight in the morning or earlier is actually perfect, especially if you plan on eating breakfast out.

On and around St Mark Square, you’ll find historic cafes and buildings, all famed for their wonderful architecture and fascinating past.

There’s the Bell Tower of St Mark, which provides a stunning view over the city and harbour, the clock-tower, with its astronomical clock, and Doge’s Palace, which also served as Casanova’s jail.

Venice is small, merely a cluster of tiny islands, connected by a labyrinth of canals and alleyways, just an arm’s width across.

It isn’t difficult to navigate around, and you won’t get lost. A three-Island cruise is offered to the islands of Burano, Murano and Torcello for 19 euros. But you can also reach these islands and Lido, a popular beach resort, by Vaparetto, the water-bus system.

The central waterway is the Grand Canal’s two-mile stretch and from that, smaller canals branch out. There are said to be 177 canals following old, natural water-courses, meandering through the city.

When the tides are high, parts of the city flood, and wooden walkways are provided. There are so many fascinating sights and scenes to take in that it all seems quite surreal on occasions.

But Venice is definitely a destination to be included on everyone’s “bucket list”.

Tenerife Sunshine Travel are offering mini-breaks to Venice, starting from only 650 euros in total, for two adults sharing a central Venice boutique hotel, bed and breakfast, and including return flights from Tenerife. Breaks can be tailor-made to suit and many date options are available.

Please email travel@tenerifesunshine.com or ring 922 751 867, or call into the Travel Centre in Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos. Open seven days a week and open until 7pm on weekdays.
