Slam dunk, rivals sunk

IBEROSTAR Tenerife, tipping-off the new basketball season, shaded their warm-up match with Herbalife Gran Canaria 74-67 to gain bragging rights ahead of the Liga Endesa season.

La Laguna-based Tenerife don’t often get to play in the South, but they are always given a big welcome, and over 1,100 fans packed Adeje’s Las Torres sports hall.

Both squads have undergone big changes, probably Tenerife the most as they have a new coach, Nenad Markovic, from Bosnia & Herzogovina.

Pivot Mike Tobey ruled the roost with 18 points on his debut, the ex-Valencia New Yorker adapting quickly to his new team-mates.

Gran Canaria were on top for the first two quarters, leading 18-13 and 18-16, but the game swung the other way as Tenerife clawed their way back with a game-changing 20-11 and a final quarter 25-20.

Some old Tenerife favourites turned on the style, with Davin White, so often the star last season, weighing in with 13 points. And Senegal-born Petit Niang also impressed with 10, including an eight-point scoring streak in the second half of the match.
