The sky’s the limit

THE 8th heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke took place on Wednesday at Skybar, Puerto Colon, and what a night we had, with Skybar helping to make this year’s competition one of the busiest.

So far, we have had an average of 14 contestants in each heat, and seen 144 songs performed. As in all the heats, a variety of songs were performed, from old to new.

Gordon Slaney, the Tenerife Loves Karaoke host for the night, got proceedings underway by introducing the judges: Skybar’s Didi and Sharon, with Paul and DJ Terry Ellens from Oasis Fm.

He explained the judging criteria and the format for the night, which entailed everyone singing twice, with the top two going through to the semi-finals. The first person to be called to the stage was Tamara, with a rarity this year, Make You Feel My Love by Adele.

After Tamara came Guido, who, straight away, got the crowd going with My Way by Frank Sinartra, then Roxanne performed Skinny Love by Birdy. Clive was next up on  stage and sang the Rod Stewart number, Every Beat of My Heart, followed by Muriel wowing the crowd with Robbie Williams’ Let Me Entertain You – and she certainly did.

Becky was called to the stage and sang You and I by Lady Gaga, much to the crowd’s delight, and was followed by Janet singing Back to Black. Our last three songs, in the first part of the evening, were Mack the Knife, a Bobby Darin number sang by Gary. Mike performed Bad Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce, and AZ chose Tony Bennett’s The Lady is a Tramp.

During the short break we were entertained by a young lady called Emilia, while the contestants’ second-song choice was given to the judges. The second half of the night got under way, and the singers sang in reverse order. First up was AZ, singing Big Spender, who got the judges hot under the collar as she threw her bra at them, much to the delight of the crowd.

Mike followed with Let Her Go (Passenger), Gary with Wonderwall (Oasis), and Janet with Nights in White Satin (The Moody Blues). Then came Becky, with One and Only (Adele), which got the crowd to their feet.

Muriel sang Mamma Do (Pixie Lott), followed by Clive with the second version of the night of My Way.

However, this was the Sex Pistols’ version, and Clive’s on-stage antics got him the biggest cheer of the night – what a performance. Our final two singers were Roxanne singing Writing’s on the Wall (Sam Smith), and Tamara with Valerie (Amy Winehouse).

After a short break, the contestants were invited back to the stage, and, in true Britain’s Got Talent style, Gordon eliminated them, one by one. Becky was the first contestant to be told that she would be going into the semi-finals, and Rosanne had to wait right to the end for her to hear the same news!

Tenerife Loves Karaoke would like to thank everyone who entered at Skybar, the owners and staff, the judges who made this another memorable heat, and, of course, this year’s sponsor Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant.
