They fully enjoyed a superb evening in Las Americas, at the Showtime venue, which included the charity-darts finals, known as the Memorial Trophy.
There was also wonderful entertainment by the Sound of Musicals cast, some scrumptious food and a few shandies … just a few, honestly!
The night kicked off with the Ladies’ Final, with Kim, of Naughty Nautas, led to the stage by walk-on man Terry Ellens, and Palms Pool Bar’s Nora, who employed the services of a bagpiper to accompany her.
That set the tone for the evening, which is really good fun, always, although it didn’t seem to help the two contestants, who played out a rather nervous match, won 2 legs to nil by Kim.
During a break in the darts action, we were fed handsomely, and entertained brilliantly with a 45-minute taster of the resident Showtime act, The Sound Of Musicals, which included mesmerising dancing and singing from the multi-talented cast.
So mesmerising, in fact, that one Phoenix Bar player actually had his chin hitting the floor! If you haven’t seen this show, you really must. Top-class entertainment!
Moving on to the Division 2 final, Bar 180’s Wayne took on Picassos’ Per and soon stamped his mark by firing in a 180 and taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five match.
Per managed to pull a leg back, but Wayne was too strong, claiming the night’s second trophy.
The much-anticipated Division 1 final between Scruffy Macs’ Tom, and Phoenix Bar’s Mitch was next up. And, with both players having won the event before, an exciting final was expected.
With the bookies having both players at 4/5, it seemed to be anyone’s match. But Tom had gone the whole league campaign unbeaten, and he used that form to dispatch Mitch with a comfortable 4-0 scoreline!
On to the main event of the evening, and the presentation of more than 40 trophies to the teams and individuals who had been successful over the last 48 weeks, some of whom were by now, in what you might call, party mood!
Congratulations to everyone.
We rounded off a fantastic fiesta of darts and merriment with a raffle draw, which included more alcohol … and, shall we say, some interesting prizes for folks to take home.
Proceeds from the raffle, combined with Memorial Trophy entry fees, always go to our chosen charity, which was again the much-appreciated Cancer Bus.
Representatives of this very worthy cause attended the evening and gave a short speech, thanking everyone for their generosity.
The total raised, which included some personal donations, beat last year’s total with an amazing 2,290 euros, for which we thank you all. It will make a big difference to someone’s life.
That’s it for another season and darts league presentation night, and all that remains is to thank our sponsors, Oasis Fm, Canarian Weekly and Chris Elkington. You done us proud, again!
Coming back down to earth, the League’s AGM for season 2017-18 is on Sunday, 30th April.
