Search continues for the missing triathlete

Local 36AS we go to press, there is still no sign of Victor Teni, who went missing on New Year’s Day.

The 40-year-old, an accomplished triathlete, has not been in contact since last Wednesday, and his vehicle was found in the mountaineers’ refuge Edmundo Herrero in the Llano de Ucanca region.

The Guardia Civil have been joined by hundreds of volunteers in a desperate search. At the time of his disappearance, authorities were unsure whether he planned to climb Mount Teide or Mount Guajara, and they were looking in both locations.

Bad weather, high winds and low temperatures have hampered the search, and the storm and snowfall yesterday (Thursday) have further hampered the rescue.

The search and rescue helicopter was grounded yesterday morning, and temperatures of -6C caused the search to be suspended later in the day.

Teni competes regularly competes on the Ironman circuit. His family are clinging to the hope that a man who once competed in the feared Hawaii triathlon has been able to survive 10 days in the harsh, cold conditions.
