Sea-side clean up in Las Galletas

About sixty people, including Red Cross volunteers, environmentalists, divers and the general public, participated in the recent campaign ‘The Clean Sea’, on the beaches of Las Galletas and Los Enojados. The initiative was developed by the Arona Environment Department led by Antonio Sosa, in collaboration with the office of Environmental Voluntary Participation and the Tenerife Cabildo.

The campaign consisted of cleaning up the beach and surrounds, as well as underwater cleaning, environmental workshops and a turtle release from ‘The Tahonilla’ Centre for Wildlife Recovery.

Participants on the day removed about 600 kilos of waste off the coast ofLas Galletas, of which roughly 500 kilos came from the bottom of the sea.

Councilman Antonio Sosa, believes, “This type of action is essential to raise public awareness, which is so important to avoid the deterioration of our natural areas, and understanding that rubbish does not only affect the landscape, but also endangers the life and habitat of local species”.
