Santa Cruz welcomes its first marathon men

Local 25THE streets of  Santa Cruz will be awash with runners next Sunday (16th Nov) as the first marathon to grace the Tenerife capital gets underway.

There will be separate events of varying distances: the 8km race, half-marathon (21km), and the full 42km distance.

More than 2,500 people will pound the course, which is well above the number of entries initially expected by organisers.

The First International Marathon of Santa Cruz de Tenerife kicks off a busy month of sport in the capital’s streets. This important event will join the Bike Festival (23rd Nov) and the Fun Run (30th Nov). T

Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermudez presented the show to the media this week and said there were great expectations.

“This marathon is a premier event and we are sure it will be a big success,” he said. “Santa Cruz is a perfect venue for this sort of event and, in the years to come, it will attract people from all over the world.”

The Mayor urged residents to support the runners  with “maximum participation on the day”.

Manuel Bermudez added: “I invite our people to come out into the streets to watch the runners, and encourage them during their path. This is ‘our’ marathon and this is the start of the race’s journey.”

Registration closed last week, with a total of 2,511 participants. Nearly 400 runners will contest the marathon, while the half-marathon has attracted just over 1,000 runners which, Island-wide,  is a record for the distance.

There are also 1,117 people contesting the 8km. The races will feature 25  nationalities, and one-third of the runners are women.

At the press conference the Mayor appeared alongside Sports Councillor Zosimus Darias; Public Safety Councillor José Alberto Diaz-Estébanez; Cabildo Insular Sports Minister Christ Pérez; Race Director Cesar Dorta and Lt Col Lorenzo Aymerich, Chief of General Staff of the Support Unit (Uapo) Command Headquarters of the Canary Islands.

Darias said his council wanted to “start a new project, and this has been rewarded by the high turnout for the race. It far exceeds what we expected”.

For his part, Diaz-Estébanez considered it a “real privilege” that Santa Cruz can accommodate this marathon. And Christ Pérez stressed: “These   events are great for tourism and sport, which always go hand in hand.”

César Dorta said the race was just a part of a big weekend in Santa Cruz. There will be pre-marathon events from the Friday (14th), starting at 5pm, with a Runner Fair, to be held at the fairgrounds.

There, the participants (who have free access, along with a guest) will find 25 companies offering services specifically designed for them.

In addition, they can collect their bibs and runners’ bag from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, and 10am to 8pm on Saturday.

The race is scheduled for a 9:30am start, from the surroundings of the Plaza of Spain, where all three races begin.

Marathon runners (42km) and “medium” runners (21km) leave at that time, while the ‘third’ contest of 8km begins from the same starting point at 10am.

The route takes the runners from the streets of La Rosa Mendez Nunez and continues along the Galceran bridge to Avenida La Salle, then on to Avenida Manuel Hermoso Rojas, passing the Fairgrounds.

The runners then go along the long straight of road by the seafront, with a couple of intersections, before connecting to the finish line, located at the same point of the race start.

The First International Marathon of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is sponsored by Nutrisport, Cajasiete, High Power and Sport Zone (the main official sponsor).
