San Silvestre puts fun in the sun run

BEFORE stepping into a New Year, 500 competitors took on the San Silvestre run around the Golden Mile area of Las Americas.

Arona Council knew it had a hit on its hands when launching it in 2016.

And again, it attracted a cross-section of experienced runners, guilty festive bingers, and those wanting to test themselves around the Compostela Beach circuit, which started and ended on the popular eating-and-shopping zone.

The beaches were packed on an afternoon of clear. blue skies. But families, spectators and the curious made sure the circuit was also packed by the time the 4-7 age group started the short-distance, children’s races from 3pm.

As the little ones got under way, adults for the main, 5km race were collecting their timing chips, stoking up on energy bars and bananas, and, in many cases, slipping into fancy-dress outfits.

Once they set off, they soon became strung out along the Avenida Las Americas and back round the beach promenade.

The mix of ages and abilities meant that two lanes were passing each other as the laps went on.

The winner was Jairo Perez de Luis (No.337), in a time of 16.31mins. Second-placed Joyce Manuel Medina Plasencia was just 0.04sec  behind, and third was Dionisio Guillen Donate (No.196), in 16.48mins.

The race was open to anyone, and several countries were represented. Norway and Finland featured on the racers’ list, but the leading overseas placing was Cameron Robertson, of Metro Aberdeen Running Club, in 18.7mins.

“I’m a regular visitor to Tenerife, but this is the first time I have entered a race here,” he said. “I got here a week ago and saw the posters, so I signed up.

“It was tough going, and I found breathing in the heat a challenge. But I was very pleased to do as well as I did. Back home our running club has 400 members.”
