Ryder Cup tees off here!

Golf

DON’T start trawling the sport’s ticket websites just yet, because this Ryder Cup-style event far from the regular, biennial match between the US and Europe.

Instead, it is the proudly-contested Canary Islands v Great Britain clash at Buenavista del Norte, on Tenerife’s north-west coast.

Today (Friday) sees the second edition of this clash, as part of the Seve Ballesteros Memorial golf weekend, on the course he designed for a 2003 opening.

Each team features 10 pro golfers, who will play each other in singles and doubles to decide this Ryder Cup. The Canaries are led by Luis Claverie, while Mike McCarthy, based at the La Sella course in Denia, Alicante, captains the GB team.

The other BG players are Lee Corfield, Colton Davis, James Ferraby, Jordan Gibb, Andy Marshall, Jamie Mould, Liam Murray, Adam Saagar, and Martin Woodbridge.

Last year, this slightly-less-famous Ryder Cup was played between the provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro) and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote), with Tenerife securing a 10-4 victory.
