RIP Mike Bown (London)

IT was a sad day for many of us here in South Tenerife, especially those in the Oasis Fm Darts League, when we heard of the sudden passing of one of the island’s good guys.

Mike Bown, affectionately known as London, retired here with his wife, Ann, 10 years ago, after a 40-year career as a London cab driver. Hence the nickname.

Mike, who settled in the Golf del Sur area, continued his love of golf, and his other passion: darts! And most of those involved in the Darts League will remember him as a top-notch player, who performed with great determination. But he always had a smile, and always took time to talk to everyone.

Over those 10 years, he played for Nauta Bar, Extreme Sports Bar and Phoenix Bar, winning the league with all three. He also won many individual and doubles trophies, with his usual throwing partner, Mitch (pictured with Mike).

But what will stick in our minds was his personality and gentle manner, and, at last Monday’s wake, it was said that our Friday darts’ nights will never be the same. He was certainly a gentleman, that’s for sure.

At this well-attended gathering, a collection for the Cancer Bus Charity raised over 400 euros, in London’s memory, for which founder Carol Salisbury is extremely grateful.

Ann has written words of thanks for the sympathy and support that she and the family have received at this difficult time.

Our dear friend London leaves behind his wife, and  daughters Lisa and Lorraine, plus grand-daughters Chloe and Katie.

And he leaves all of us with memories of a man loved by all of us.

Rest In Peace, London.
