How to get an NIE number

The Spanish authorities issue this number so that they can uniquely identify foreigners. It is equivalent to the Spanish citizens DNI, identity, number. You are legally obliged to apply for this if you are going to be making payments in to the Hacienda (Spanish Tax Authorities). Once you have applied it is issued on the spot.

Once received you should be aware the the certificate is only valid for 3 months. The Spanish authorities will only issue 2 certificates per calendar year.

What you need the number for:

  • Working as an employee or self employed.
  • Buying a car
  • Application for a telephone account
  • Application for an electricity account.
  • Application for a bank account (resident account).
  • Buying a property.

How to apply:

  • Go to the Officina de Extranjeros or the Comisaria de Policia


  • Full, valid, original passport and one photocopy
  • The official NIE Solicitud form completed and signed.
  • 2 passport photographs
  • Completed and paid TASA with Banks stamp. (registration fee)
