It’s rebounding on them

Basketball

Estudiantes 97 Iberostar Tenerife 92

SOMETIMES good, sometimes bad… the lack of consistency is making Iberostar Tenerife sweat on a place in the end-of-season, play-off competition.

They needed to build on their morale-boosting, local derby win at Gran Canaria, but were beaten at Estudiantes.

Tenerife’s problem was that they failed to sink their rebound shots. They did well to fight back from a 28-19 first-quarter deficit, but, ultimately, let the game slip away. The other quarters went 25-29, 21-19, and 23-25. Yet the big guns were firing well. Mateusz Ponitka, who top-scored with 18 points, was well supported by Josh Akognon (17), while new addition Tai Odiase made a sound defensive debut.

Tenerife are clinging on to the eighth and final play-off spot, with three league games left.

But they will have a real battle on their hands when they host third-placed Barcelona on Sunday at 5.30pm.

It looks as though American Tim Abromaitis will have to sit this one out after straining his left ankle.
