Pirates’ final thrust

THEY saved the best for last. Arona Carnival won’t bow out quietly, and, this weekend, the costumes will be more outrageous, the music louder, and the cast bigger than ever.

There was a slightly more formal feel to the opening Cabalgata parade last Saturday night, from Playa de Las Americas, but plenty of evidence of this year’s pirate theme.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is the “day” carnival from noon at Los Cristianos showground, with top Spanish chart acts belting out dance music. From 5pm, there will be a fancy-dress contest by the fisherwoman’s statue at the old beach.

The day ends with a musical choice. From 10pm, a grand dance, featuring a live showband, will descend on the main showground stage, and a DJ set will take over the smaller stage, outside the Cultural Centre, from 11pm.

Sunday starts with a display of classic cars from 11am, and a pet show from noon, both at the showground. Everyone’s favourite is the Coso parade, starting at 4pm from Paloma Beach apartments, at the lower end of Los Cristianos, to the Cultural Centre, in a two-hour extravaganza.

The newly-elected carnival queens and candidates of each age group will travel in style on tall floats, enabling all to see the elaborate costumes, which replaced the official pirate-themed outfits of the opening parade.

And the main stage will prolong the party into the early hours, with live music.

Monday brings the final act as the giant sardine is paraded through the streets to meet its burning demise at Los Cristianos beach.

It sets off from the Cultural Centre at 9pm and will be followed along by wailing widows, throwing themselves to the ground in mourning.

But, of course, they’ll all be on their feet for one, final, night-into-day of dancing in the showground.
