Phebe’s star keeps shining

KEDDY’S Entertainment is always on the lookout for up-and-coming talent, and our scouts were excited to find one of the next stars to perform at our showcase, back in April, for The UK X Factor.

We thought we would introduce this next generation of talent to all our readers, here in Tenerife.

Phebe Skirrow was born in Tenerife in November 2003, and lives with her parents, Matthew and Alison. Her brother Jak, 18, played football for CD Tenerife, and now studies at Loughborough College, in the UK.

Phebe started dancing at the tender age of three, at the Ritmania Fame Academy, Los Cristianos. Owners Emma Burgess and Carla Guest knew, back then, that she had a “special something”.

Phebe’s first audition was, aged seven, for the dance role of Junior Michael Jackson in the European Tour of  stage musical “Forever King of Pop”,  endorsed by the Jackson family.

Choreographer Yolanda Torosio, scenic and artistic director Jesus Sanz San Sebastian, and the creator of the show Carlos López, chose Phebe to play this iconic role. She hooked them with her self-confidence and great stage presence.

She made a number of TV appearances, and performed in front of thousands of people at the Pabellon Santiago Martin, La Laguna.

Throughout the summer of 2012, Phebe was also very privileged to be asked to perform in the musical show “History”, at Magma Art & Congress.

She sang “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz”, and also danced to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”, three nights a week. In the same year, alongside eight other students, she won the televised Canaries talent show “Islasvision Junior”.

In 2014, Phebe auditioned for a new TV show “Pequeños Gigantes”, singing and dancing her way to the semi-finals, which took place in Madrid.

In 2017, her dance and theatre school were asked to compete again in “Islasvision Fit Talent Junior”, a competition of 12 groups throughout the Canary Isles, who were previous finalists and winners. The theme was Musicals, and 20 students danced their hearts out to “42nd Street”. Phebe was very honoured to sing solo vocals, and Ritmania were crowned winners, once again!

Phebe also turned her hand to strutting the catwalk, showcasing the beautiful dresses from Cinderellas in La Caleta, owned by Anna Mariel Nolan. She said: “I felt like a princess for the day, and absolutely loved it!”

Her latest achievement was to be asked to join a showcase of Tenerife’s finest talent for the Tenerife auditions of The UK X Factor.  Vocal coach Natalie Brito Stafford, from Keddy’s Entertainment, put her name forward. Phebe, and other local artists, performed in front of the X Factor producers at the Sandos Hotel, San Blas, Golf del Sur.

At 14, she was the youngest performer, and was extremely grateful to Adam Keddy for giving her the opportunity. She told the producers: “I become a different person when I’m on stage, and it makes me feel alive.”

She has just started her final year at El Medano High School, and loves spending her spare time attending Ritmania Fame Academy, studying ballet, tap, modern, funky, hip-hop, lyrical, Broadway, acro, Irish, singing, drama and musical theatre. Phebe said: “I have made so many wonderful friends at Ritmania over the years. We are one big family, and always there for each other.”

She has achieved Distinction, with Honours, through dance examination board IDT, and is looking forward to taking her taking her first LAMDA performance examination, in coming months.

Something different that Phebe is very excited about is starring in Tenerife’s first pantomime this Christmas. “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” is directed by musical theatre and drama teacher, Lone Guest, with support from Joe Cawley, Tenerife’s very own local author of bestselling “More Ketchup Than Salsa: Confessions of a Tenerife Barman”. Phebe said: “I am loving playing the role of The Grinch. He’s definitely a character, just like me!”

Her ambition is to gain a scholarship to a performing-arts school in the UK. She said: “I was very lucky to be shown around London’s Urdang Academy last December. As soon as I walked into the reception, I knew this was where I wanted to study. I attended their Summer School in August.”

When asking Phebe who has inspired her, musically, she said: “Definitely Christina Aguilera. I adore the film Burlesque; it’s one of my favourites. I just love the power and range in her voice. She’s amazing. Also, Adele – who doesn’t love Adele? And then there’s Bruno Mars and Michael Jackson; the list is endless!”

Phebe and fellow student Shannon O’Reilly successfully landed roles in the American production of “The Princess and the Pea” in Hot Springs, USA. They performed in July, and smashed it!

Phebe’s passion for the performing arts is extremely clear to see, and we wish her every success in the future. Watch this space for news of this talented young lady!
