Perez spot-on again

Women’s football

Egatesa Granadilla 2  Zaragoza 0

THERE’S no stopping Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife these days, and another comprehensive home victory firmed up fourth place, narrowing the gap to three points on third-place Athletic.

Granadilla, watched by a 500-strong crowd at their San Isidro ground, set about opening up the opposition from the start, and Maria Jose and Eva Llamas both went close.

But they had to wait 25 minutes to open the scoring. Pisco beat the Zaragoza keeper with a firm shot, and Granadilla were up and running.

Yet they left it deep into the second half to underline their superiority, with a 85th-minute penalty from leading scorer Maria Jose Perez.

On Sunday, the ladies are back on their travels, with an away game at Albacete.

Meanwhile, the youth programme at the Granadilla club is making good progress. Paola Hernandez has been selected for Spain’s Under-16 squad for a UEFA development tournament in the UK against Scotland, England and Denmark. It runs from Monday until Sunday,18th February.
