Papi, daddy of them all!

A MULTITUDE of long-distance races, across all terrains, took place in Gran Canaria over four days, ending last Sunday.

And Italian Luca Papi, the most remarkable marathon runner of all, demonstrated just what the Transgrancanaria was all about.

He won the toughest race of all, spread over last Thursday and Friday, and completed the mind-boggling, 265km race in 50hrs 14 mins 13secs, at around 11am on Friday morning.

Believe it or not, Luca was back on course the same evening for the 128km event, which he also finished. In all, he covered 393.6 kilometres in a remarkable 77hrs 37hrs 20mins.

“He’s living proof that he’s from another planet,” said one admiring organiser.

Alongside a children’s race, there were four other categories, comprising events at 65km, 42km, 30km … and a mere 17km, in this leg of the Ultra Trail World Tour.
