Overseas tourists heading for a record this summer

FOREIGN tourists in Spain are expected to set a record this summer, for the seventh year in succession, according to Industry Minister Reyes Maroto.

The sector is hugely important to the country, accounting for 12% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Maroto told a press conference that Spain would have had 29.6m international visitors by the end of the summer, which would be half-a-million more than last year. Only France gets more arrivals each year.

Hand-in-hand with increases in visitor numbers, Maroto expects to see tourist spending rise to a record high. He is predicting growth of 3.2% between July and September compared with the same 2018 period. This would mean a figure of around €33.9bn.

By nation, the UK is the most important market, accounting for 18.5m visitors, with 11.4m Germans also arriving. And, as well as consolidating these markets, the Spanish Government wants to attract new tourists from places such as China.
