Ocean-friendly trips will be an eye-opener

PROYECTO FarFalle, is an environmentally-friendly tourism company with a difference, here in Tenerife.

It combines a boat trip out to sea from its Los Gigantes base, along with oceanographer Carmen Melendez, who founded the company.

The trip raising awareness and a conscience, demonstrating the importance of conserving, caring for and respecting our environment, which is, obviously, aimed at the ocean’s marine life.

During the tour, customers can collect samples of microplastics and analyse them on the boat, in its small laboratory, which really should interest them, especially the youngsters.

Proyecto FarFalle officials running the trips hope to foster a critical understanding among participants towards actions that cause the degradation of the sea, and the way in which they can change customs and habits.

All the samples will contribute to the Mycotrophic Project of the University of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, regarding marine microplastics in the ocean surrounding the Canary Islands.

In addition, participants can monitor marine mammals in the area, as well as studying their behaviour, activity patterns and group structure, as well as recording their acoustic activity with a hydrophone, which detects sounds under water.

And, thanks to scientific tourism, the company allocates 70% of each ticket sold for research.

Tickets, costing between 90-150 euros, are available from https//www.proyectofarfalle.com/
