Neighbours sink Marino

CD Marino 1 UD Los Llanos 2

THERE’S a lot of work ahead if Marino are to rise into the top half of their Tercera Division group, as this clash demonstrated.

Los Llanos, from La Palma, were more direct in front of goal, and, with keeper Chico on top form, they picked up three points in Las Americas.

New Marino coach Zeben Hernandez is still finding his way, and some old faces returned to the blue shirts. Yassine was the pick up front and Hector Pano had a great game in the heart of defence.

But the overall flow of the team was a little slow and predictable.

Nami and Pedro combined well down the right to force an early corner, which came to nothing. Then Yassine drew his marker out, to leave room for a Pedro shot, which went wide.

Los Llanos sat back and soaked up a lot of the opening pressure, before testing Marino. Hector had to cut out a Gonzalo raid, and Nami was forced to cover speedily after a poor clearance offered encouragement to the visitors.

There was a let-off when David dropped a shot from Nami, while Mahy tried to catch the home defence out with a low tester, that skimmed the grass.

Someone needed to slow the ball down in midfield for Marino so they could pick their options wisely, but, too often, they hurried and wasted chances.

Marino should have made the most of sustained pressure which brought three straight corners. Yassine created the best chance, digging out a loose ball and firing it along the goalmouth. But there was no final touch.

The visitors went ahead just after the half-hour from a corner that Nani headed into the net, despite being floored by keeper David’s tackle.

Ahmed opened the second half with a weak shot, which trickled slowly in front of the Los Llanos goal before going outside the post. Felipe came on for Pedro to add a little more urgency, and Ahmed headed over the bar.

Pacha had his eye on a second goal for Los Llanos when he found him self free in space, and only a timely intervention from David denied him.

Marino got back on equal terms with 80 minutes gone. A good cross found Yassine sneaking in at the near post with a powerful header, which was just out of the keeper’s grasp.

That could have been the springboard for winning, but relegation-threatened Los Llanos looked the hungrier.

Gonzalo should have buried the ball with just David to beat, and Pacha wasted another glaring chance. Chicho, in the visitors’ goal, had an inspired finish with two timely clearances. Then, a break to the other end found Pacha, who cut in from the right to score a glorious goal in the final minute.

Even an injury-time surge from all the Marino players, including the keeper, couldn’t save the day.
