Nandu’s extravaganza such a huge attraction

NANDU Rugby Club, based in Adeje, hosted their annual invitation tournament last Saturday at La Caleta’s T3 sports complex, in La Caleta.

With the buzz of the recent Rugby World Cup carried over, organisers, players and spectators were all eager to put on a good show for their respective clubs.

Teams in attendance among the 240-plus competitors included boys, girls, ladies and men, from the Canary Islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

The event kicked off at 10am, with the Under-18 teams battling it out in their first phase of games, before the Under-10s and Under-14s s went hammer-and-tongs for the next couple of hours.

Competitors throughout the entire morning showed bravery, skill, speed and team spirit, all of which is why this entertaining sport, and the life skills it provides for our youngsters, is so successful.

The junior presentations were made, amid the food, drinks, music and camaraderie, before the Under-18s went into the second phase of their schedule, which included some fine tries from the Nandu team.

Mid-afternoon was cleared for the senior teams to play, and they did not disappoint as they demonstrated the physical demands of playing this sport, combined with flashes of skill and flair.

With the music still playing, the beer still flowing and the sun still shining, it was past 5.30pm when the day drew to an end, and the teams peeled themselves away, slowly, from the amazing atmosphere at Tenerife Top Training (T3).

Many participants from various clubs stayed and continued to help tidy up, while others said their goodbyes and made their way home, reflecting on what had been an outstanding day of rugby for the young… and older!

Nandu Rugby welcomes any newcomers to give try rugby a try with us. If you have not played before, you will be supported and encouraged by our players and coaches.

But if you have played the game previously, we would love you to join us, as we continue to develop our club.

We train at Los Torres Sports Complex: Seniors on Tuesdays (7.30-9pm), Juniors on Fridays (4.30-6pm) and Saturdays (10-11am).

Finally, a special thank-you to Trish’s cleaning services, Tenerife, who have sponsored the seniors’ brand-new kits.
