Missing Mat leads to a double defeat

JUST when Iberostar Tenerife were getting back on track at Malaga last Sunday, an ankle injury to Mateusz Ponitka sidelined the free-scoring Polish player after nine minutes, which led to a 72-62 defeat.

With their star player unable to return for Wednesday’s home game against Delteco Gipuzkoa, there was more suffering to come as they lost 88-92.

Despite the injury blow, though, Tenerife put up a defiant show at Malaga with the quarter scores going 24-11, 8-20, 26-18, and 14-13. Greek player Kostas Vasilieladis pitched in with 13 points to lead the away scoring, but it wasn’t enough.

Tenerife tried to boost the squad, ahead of the home midweek game, by recalling American Davin White. But, clearly, he was not match-fit and played barely two minutes, without scoring.

The quarters showed a steady downward slide as Tenerife were overwhelmed  28-21, 28-14, 17-28, and 15-29.

There was some resistance from the home bench, American-Nigerian Josh Akognon top-scoring with 22 points, and Tim Abromaitis was good value for his 17 points.

But the squad really is is looking thin these days, and Tenerife seem destined to drop even further than their current ninth position in the league.
