Military Superbase Planned

Alonso explained that the creation of the new base would imply the closure of various different military posts in the area although the Almeyda post in the city centre would remain functional.

During his first official visit to the island since his appointment as Minister of Defence Alonso explained that the main reason behind the creation of the super base is to reduce the costs involved in maintaining each of the bases in the La Laguna area as well as concentrating forces in one place and removing the “military” element form the residential areas of the borough.

The project would of course involve the purchase of the land needed , which is estimated to be around five hectares, and as such will not be without its problems especially as some of the plots date back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Alonso praised the professionalism of the members of the Armed Forces in the island adding that the creation of the super base would imply a slight increase in the number of land based and air based soldiers although the number of Spanish sailors would remain the same.

It must be pointed out that military service is no longer obligatory in Spain and as such the soldiers who man the bases in Hoya Fria, La Cuesta and Las Canteras are now professional soldiers many of whom come from other parts of Spain apart from the Canary Islands. The military presence, although it is not felt in the South of the island, is certainly noticeable in the northern countryside of La Esperanza near the Los Rodeos airport and there are several bases in La Laguna itself as well as the bases in the centre of Santa Cruz , and so the creation of a super base will make a big difference to life in the area for the local people .
