Medals galore as Canaries dazzle in judo tournament

THE Canary Islands, competing in the “cadet” and “infant” categories, won 31 medals in the Spanish Judo Cup event, hosted by Granadilla de Abona, and attracting more than 800 competitors.

The Canaries gained eight gold medals, nine silvers and 14 bronzes in the 10th year of the tournament, organised in collaboration with the Higher Sports Council, the National and Canarian judo federations, the Granadilla sports department and its Judo Club, among others.

The Canary Islands excelled in the infant category, with the best results of all, winning 11 medals, while Galicia’s cadets came away with 16 medals. The event attracted participants from Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic and Canary Islands, Catalonia, Castilla León, Castilla La Mancha, Cantabria, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, Portugal, Rioja, Valencia and the Basque Country.

Marcos González Alonso, the first Lieutenant Mayor and Councillor for Sports, along with Works Councillor María Concepción Cabrera and other members of the municipal corporation, attended the medal presentation ceremony.

Marcos González congratulated all the participants and host club “Judo Granadilla”, in addition to thanking the national and Canarian judo federations for backing Granadilla to host the event.

Judo Granadilla has a history of over 37 years and many triumphs, in addition to the great success in each year of the organisation of this championship.

As for the Granadilla’s results, a bronze was won by Ainhoa Salazar Ramos, a female cadet of less than 63 kilos, and two fifth places went to Alejandro Chávez Mendoza, a male cadet of less than 73 kilos, and Diego Pérez Moldovan, the under-38kg male infant.

This test was a scoring event for the Spanish Championship, and participation in international championships, through the national team.
