Mallorca mixing with Spanish legends again

MALLORCA are back in the big time, after a stunning comeback in the second leg of their play-off final saw them overcome Deportivo la Coruña.

They are returning to La Liga, and will face the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid for the first time in six years, after overturning a first-leg, two-goal deficit.

Ante Budimir, Salva Sevilla and Abdon Prats scored during a 3-0 win in the second leg, held at their home Iberostar Stadium, which led to a 3-2 success on aggregate.

It means they join Osasuna and Granada as the promoted teams this year.

Last Sunday’s result led to scenes of celebrations, with thousands of fans flooding on to the pitch to salute their team at the final whistle. And there were noisy scenes in Palma through the night as the jubilation spilled over.

Rafa Nadal, French Open tennis champion and Mallorca native, who was in the stands, backing his local team, posted a picture of the fans’ celebrations on Instagram stating: “No words, incredible emotions.”

Mallorca had finished the La Liga 2 season in fifth place, but they overcame fourth-placed Albacete in the play-off

semi-final. Third-place Malaga were beaten by Deportivo, who had finished sixth.

Deportivo won last Thursday’s first leg 2-0 after Mallorca’s Marc Pedraza was shown a red card in the first half.
