A magical, musical obsession!

Entertainment loves to get involved with different events on the island, whether it’s managing an overall event, or simply supplying artistes to enhance customers’ experiences.

From the Hard Rock Café to the UK X factor, we have seen it all, and this weekend is no different, when, once again, we are proud to be involved in the Tenerife Entertainment Awards.

Last year, we opened the carnival-themed Tenerife Entertainment Awards with the superb African acrobats, followed by the carnival group Ritmo Sureno. This year, for the first time, we are teaming up with Rendezvous Restaurant to host the 2018 VIP pre-party, for all the nominees and sponsors, so we thought we would let you know about the acts that will be performing this Sunday.

Obsession Duo, Ray and Chrissie, will be performing live music, as they have been for over 25 years, starting in pubs and clubs in the south of England.

Ray was a member of Mungo Jerry for many years, enjoying worldwide success with hits including “In the Summertime”, spending eight weeks at the No. 1 spot,  in between working with David Essex in the film “That’ll Be the Day”, and playing bass on the smash hit single “Rock On”.

In the Eighties, Ray had a top-40 hit as the singer with the band UK Players, with the song “Love’s Gonna Get You”, and was privileged to support the legendary Marvin Gaye, on tour.

Chrissie, always known as “The Wild One”, has retained her legendary, distinctive hair styles over the years. She began her musical career on the oboe (one of the hardest musical instruments to learn!), and played in youth wind bands, and, in the Eighties, punk music took her direction to the saxophone.

Chrissie plays alto, soprano and tenor saxophone, as well as percussion.

Nowadays, Obsession Duo seem to have a niche,  twisting classic songs into a jazzy, lounge, chill-out style, which sits wonderfully in restaurants and terraces, for a laid-back atmosphere.

Mind you, there’s always the chance to “rock up” for a private party, when requested. Obsession Duo are delighted to be performing at the TEAs’ pre-VIP party for Keddy’s Entertainment, starting their set with a little “chilled-out twist”  on classic favourites such as “Walking On Sunshine”, “Every Breath You Take”, “Wonderwall” and “Sweet Dreams”, and then adding a little  of their own “Obsession Twist”! They will be finishing with a tad-more-upbeat repertoire, depending on the audience, on the day!

Ray and Chrissie are looking forward to what will, no doubt, be a memorable party! Then we have the magical showman himself, Oliver Van Damme, performing close-up magic for all the sponsors and nominees. We asked him a few questions, to get to know him that little bit more.

Keddys Entertainment: What age did you realise that your future would be in magic?
Oliver: I remember, at 17, feeling completely captivated by the world of magic, during a close-up magic session by artist Lino Ajello, who later became my teacher and mentor. It took a full year of intensive training to learn how to perfect my first, magic tricks. It was Lino who inspired me to aim for perfection, before showing anything to a live audience.
KE: Do you remember how your first magic show felt?
Oliver: Absolutely! I was 18, and hooked, immediately, to performing for an audience. During the following six years, I did as many shows as I could, to practise my tricks: kids’ parties, family reunions, street shows … they all contributed to the confidence and experience I have today.
KE: You were born in Belgium. When did you start travelling?
Oliver: At 24, I started performing internationally, and had shows in Holland, Luxemburg and Switzerland. Later, I decided to spend my summers performing in Tenerife. That’s where I got in contact with Venture restaurants, and landed a full-time job, entertaining their guests with my close-up magic. I decided to stay in Tenerife just a bit longer.
KE: You are now performing in hotels all over the island. Is this you dream job?
Oliver: Definitely! In 2016, I started a stage show in hotels all over Tenerife, such as Palacio Guia de Isora, Bahia del Duque, Jardines del Teide, and Gran Hotel Costa Adeje – just to name a few.

KE: If someone wanted to know more about you, and where you perform, how could they get in touch?

Oliver: People can follow me on Instagram: @olivervandammemagic or Facebook: @olivervandamme

So, an interesting guy who will be dazzling everyone with his amazing talent, this weekend. As you can imagine, all events take a lot of planning behind the scenes, from setting up all the sound equipment, to making sure the artistes have a plan of action, in order to maximise the customer experience.

Fortunately, we have Natalie, our Tenerife entertainment manager, overseeing the event on the day. She is working closely with everyone involved, including Rendezvous Restaurant staff, and making sure that everyone has a great time.

We are so looking forward to the VIP pre-party, and a few of us from Keddy’s Entertainment will be staying to cheer on all the nominees, enjoying a perfect way to celebrate all entertainment on this island.

We know how hard everyone works to make sure the thousands of tourists have a wonderful time all year round, so that they come back year after year. In our eyes, just attending the Tenerife Entertainment Awards, and celebrating, makes us all winners on the day!

To book any of the acts mentioned, e-mail info@keddysentertainment.com or call our office Monday-Friday, on 922 096975. But, for now, have a great weekend, because we certainly will …
