Cabildo contacts Southern districts to inform on the opening of new South Delegation - 16.05.2008
Félix Sierra: “It is important that all the districts in the area feel supported”

This week the island councillor delegated to the Southern Region of the island, Félix Sierra, has held talks with the mayor of Vilaflor, Manuel Fumero, to discuss different issues related to investment planned by the different departments of the Cabildo Insular and the Gobierno de Canarias, as well as the public works and projects which are currently underway.

The Cabildo’s new office is called “Delegación Territorial para la Comarca Sur”. According to Councillor Sierra, “The main aim of the meeting is to officially announce the opening of the South Area Delegation of the Cabildo de Tenerife to the mayors and councillors working on the local councils in the south of Tenerife, which is now at their disposal, to help boost social and economic development in the region and bring the Cabildo much closer both in an administrative and political sense. The idea is to set up and develop channels for the exchange of communication and cooperation between the different administrative bodies in the South and the Area Delegation of the Island Government. Is important that the mayors in the South Region feel supported at all times by the Cabildo”, the councillor added.

The mayor of Vilaflor took advantage of the island councillor’s visit to tell him which investments are needed right away. These include the urgent opening of a day care centre for the elderly, a cultural centre and covered sports facilities so that local youngsters can play sports all year round, independent of the weather outside. Also, Fumero reminded Sierra that there is no nursery in the district and that the opening of the new health centre in the town has been subject to delays. He also aired the problems with water Vilaflor is now experiencing due to lack of rainfall.

Both the island councillor and the mayor of Vilaflor highlighted the major step forward by the Cabildo in setting up the South Delegation. In Fumero opinion, anything which brings the government closer to the citizens will result in an improvement in services. “Particularly Vilaflor because of its geographical situation and the South Region in general, really need to feel that the Island Administration is close at hand, Insular”, he stressed.

The meeting in the “chasnero” municipality opens up a series of visits by the island’s southern councillor to the different districts in the South, specifically those which are under the auspices of the plan of action agreed by the Cabildo de Tenerife for the Island’s South Delegation headed by the Island Councillor for the South in Granadilla, San Miguel Arona, Adeje, Guía de Isora and Santiago del Teide.
