Little Yahaira sings out for the Fat Man

It will be the
third time she has been involved with Spain’s biggest lottery draw, which
marks the start of the festive season.

The winning
numbers are drawn and sung out by pupils of Madrid’s San Ildefonso primary school, which
was once an orphanage and has always been home to the children who make the
draw.

Will she
draw out and sing the winning number again?  “I doubt if I will be that lucky,” said the
youngster.

Traditionally,
winners of El Gordo give gifts to the children who call their numbers, and Ivan
Quintero, also 11, will be performing alongside Yahaira. “I can see myself
calling the winning number, and my mother in tears,” he said, smiling.

The draw
can confuse even the most mathematically-inclined and, because of the enormous number
of prizes, the whole thing takes about three hours, with the children working
in as many as nine shifts

There are
195 jackpots, each of three million euros, another 195 second prizes of 1m euros,
then 195 prizes of 0.5m euros, and so on.
