Legends come to Tenerife

Local 23REGGAE band UB40 kick-start an ambitious new project here in the South when they perform a special gig in March. They will play at the auditorium in the Pyramids of Arona on Friday, 18th March 18 – the day after St Patrick’s Day.

They will perform some of their biggest hits, including Falling In Love With You, Red Red Wine, Kingston Town, Cherry Oh Baby, Rat In My Kitchen, I Got You Babe, Sing Our Own Song and One In Ten.

The venue will have a limited capacity of just 1,500 seats, so the gigs will be intimate. Tickets, already on sale, cost from 49-79 euros and can be purchased from www.ticketbell.com.

The “Legends Live” concept will bring to the South a series of seven unique concerts during 2016 featuring groups and soloists from the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties.

A second Legends Live event has also been confirmed for 22nd April, when prog-rock band The Alan Parsons Live Project will also be playing Arona.

UB40 have been one of most successful British bands of all time, selling over 70 million records before the band split a few years ago. In fact, there are now two UB40’s!

This one features Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue, all founding members of the original UB40. Ali and Mickey left the band in 2008 and reunited with Astro when he left in 2013.

The original UB40 line-up, with Ali, Astro and Mickey, enjoyed huge success over a 30-year period, from 1979 until 2008, including No.1 albums and multiple, top-10 gold and platinum-selling albums, together with Grammy nominations and four No.1 singles worldwide.

Their website says: “We would not want anyone to confuse Ali, Astro and Mickey’s band with the band that carried on using the name UB40 after 2008.

“Made up of other founding members and new members, they tried to replace us in their attempt to trade off the reflected glory of the success of the original line-up. Only with Ali Campbell, the legendary voice of UB40, reunited with Astro and Mickey, can audiences get to experience the closest thing to the sound of the hugely-successful original line-up of UB40 as all the hits are played.

“They can also get to hear these three founding members’ and UK reggae pioneers’ latest take on the genre.”

The Tenerife date is part of Ali and Co’s large 2016 tour. The lads will play a host of dates early in the year in New Zealand – where Ali spends most of his time – before moving on to Australia and Indonesia. Then they arrive here, before performing eight British dates.
