Hot chestnuts are on the go

Local 17ORGANISED gangs are stealing chestnuts in Arafo in the north-east of Tenerife. The tasty treats, now in season, are brimming over in baskets on supermarket shelves all over the Island.

It seems that some people prefer to do their shopping out of hours, because police patrols have stopped several gangs near Arafo, and confiscated 40 kilos of the little brown nuts.

Chestnuts are on sale at 35 points around Tenerife, and they will also be featured in some special tapas promotions.

You’ll find old-fashioned braziers cooking chestnuts in the streets of Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz, and sold by the bag.

And the end of the month, Valle San Lorenzo hosts a special chestnut night, with stalls in the streets and diverse tapas dishes in bars and restaurants, featuring the versatile nut.

Look out for cheese with chestnut purée, chestnut croquettes, or chestnut lasagne.

Big respect to the police for guarding our chestnuts … well, they don´t just grow on trees, do they?
