Your home in Tenerife

Buying a holiday home in Tenerife is often the culmination of hard work and dreams.

A property abroad presents an opportunity to relax in a different climate, and increase leisure and family time. However, the cost of buying the property, and the attached expenses, are considerable, so furnishings need to be organised in a cost-effective manner.

Fortunately, style does not need to be compromised. The most important thing is to work with the property you have, and not recreate a version of your home away from home, otherwise you won’t feel as though you are on holiday!

Finding a balance between representing your personality and your new surroundings is important. This can be achieved by aiming for a 75/25 split in favour of local-style furnishings, the remainder being your personal taste. Intersperse local fixtures with small, personal items.

Furthermore, climate will play a part in the textures and materials chosen.  Certain plastics are ill-suited to warm weather, and heavy, textured materials are not suitable for hot climates. Smooth, shiny surfaces are easy to keep clean, and bedspreads and cushion covers should always be washable.

Take into account how you are likely to spend your time on holiday. You may be less inclined to spend hours in front of the TV, and want more time outside on the patio. The sofa may not get as much use as in the UK, but can double up as a bed to increase occupancy.

It’s worthwhile investing in one of good quality, to avoid problems in the future. Your kitchen should have a full inventory, but you may not need all the items you have at home. You are likely to eat different food, and perhaps barbeque more, for example.

In most cases, the holiday dwelling will be smaller than the original home, so storage may be an issue. These problems can be solved with some careful planning, using beds with storage, bedside tables with drawers, and shelf units within cupboards. These can all help to maximise space.

If you are away from your holiday home for long periods, consider fitting sun curtains or blinds to keep your property cool and dark, and prevent fading. So work with the style of the property and the climate, and make the most of your holiday investment.

All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.
