Heart-breaking Final loss

MEMORIES of big crowds, big wins, and, ultimately, a heart-breaking final defeat in the Queen’s Cup, will stay with Arona Tenerife Sur for a long time.

Last Friday and Saturday, nearly 2,000 people watched each game in La Laguna, as Arona powered through their quarter and semi-final, before losing out on the big prize. But it will surely inspire them to continue raising their standards.

On the Friday, Arona opened with a 3-0 set victory over CC 7 Palmas Gran Canaria. They dominated the match with a 25-21, and two 25-17 victories.

That brought them up against Santa Cruz team Dimorol Libbys, and, thanks to the driving force of Colombian Wanda Banquero, they came out on top with set scores of 18-25, 25-18, 25-27, and 23-25.

The Sunday final was always going to be tough as they faced up to Logrono, from La Rioja. It was live on TV Canaria, and, in front of a packed sports hall, Arona couldn’t get into their stride, going down in straight sets 25-18, 25-24, and 25-22.

There was a lot of praise for Arona, and player-coach Romina Lamas and Elzbieta Nykiel were chosen to be among the six best players of the tournament.

Third-placed Arona, back to Spanish Premier League action tomorrow (Saturday), travel to CV San Cugat, who are just below them in the table.
