Granadilla Port Plans
In response to a question made by EU green deputy David Hammerstein EU Commissioner Stavros Dimas confirmed that the decision taken by the Commission last year to go ahead with the Granadilla project stood firm despite pressure from the Greens to study the possibilities of making the Santa Cruz port larger.
Dimas indicated that the project to extend the port of Santa Cruz, which has already been rejected by the central and regional governments, is not viable because of the lack of land to construct the storage area for merchandise and the necessary industrial installations for a port of the kind contemplated for Granadilla; problems that are further complicated by the absence of quarries near the capital from which the natural materials necessary for the construction of the port could be extracted.
The Granadilla project, which arrived at the European Union headquarters several years ago has always been surrounded by controversy and has been accompanied by no less than 5,000 official complaints, the majority of which have come from ecological “green” groups concerned about protecting the flora and fauna of the Los Sebadales area where the port is to be constructed and the only provision that has been dictated by the EU is that the constructors must respect the environment of the area in compliance with the Red Natura 2000 rulings.
In fact the port of Granadilla was approved by the EU commission last November because of the enormous economic benefit the installations will bring not only to the island of Tenerife but also to the Archipelago as a whole.
The work will include the construction of 2.5 kilometre long breakwater 55 metres deep which will be filled in with rubble obtained from nearby work. The construction of 26 hectares of storage warehouses, a general merchanise port of 200 m and a commerical port of 19.5 hectares also forms part of the plans.
In February the ports authority handed over the contract to the UTE Sato, FCC and Promotora Punta Larga for the sum of 114.5 million euros for the construction of the breakwater; the work must comply with the regulations and must be finished in 37 months time.
