England stunners leave poor Spain bewildered

Spain 2 England 3

A YOUTHFUL England side stunned Spain in Sevilla on Sunday, scoring a shock win in the Nations League.

It was the first competitive home defeat for Spain in 15 years, and the youngest England side since 1959 were 3-0 up inside 40 minutes.

They took the game to Spain with fast, counter-attacking football at Sevilla’s Estadio Benito Villamarín.

It is the first time Spain have lost on home soil to England in 15 years and 29 games, manager Gareth Southgate displaying a tactical masterclass with a side whose average age was just 23.

England’s fearless play echoed some of their Russian World Cup magic, to the delight of the thousands of travelling England fans.

Southgate has a crop of young talent to choose from, and his team demonstrated that they were able to play with an attacking flair not seen since England’s heady days of the 1990s.

Raheem Stirling ended his international goal drought in the 16th minute to break the deadlock. And 13 minutes later, Marcus Rashford doubled their advantage, striking the ball past Manchester United team-mate David De Gea in goal.

England skipper Harry Kane, who set him up sweetly,

was also instrumental in England’s third, his square pass in the six-yard box, following a dinked Ross Barkley chip into the box, being swept in by Stirling before half-time.

A startled Spain pulled themselves together in the second half, and reduced the arrears just before the hour mark when Paco Alcacer’s deft header hit the net. But England held out for the rest of the match.

A diving Sergio Ramos header with the final touch of the game earned Spain a last-gasp, consolation goal.

It restored some pride for coach Luis Enrique and his team, but there was no doubting who triumphed.
