By ‘eck, Yorkshire has the best grub in world

A PUB in Yorkshire has the best restaurant in the world, according to TripAdvisor, beating the finest eateries from Spain and all the other countries involved.

The rankings are based on millions of customer reviews over a 12-month period, and the Black Swan in Oldstead, North Yorkshire, shot straight to the top.

It’s the first time a British restaurant placed first in the list since it began in 2012, and is hailed as an incredible feat, especially as it had never been listed in the rankings before.

Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, in Great Milton, Oxfordshire, came second, while the Martín Berasategui in Lasarte-Oria, north-east Spain, which was ranked first in 2015 and last year, was placed fifth.

The Black Swan, which has a Michelin star and four AA rosettes, was run by the Banks family, who bought it as a struggling village pub. Tommy and James were just 18 and 17 respectively when they took over the running of the pub after their parents stood down in 2006. Now, they run the pub together.

Head chef Tommy, who is the UK’s youngest Michelin-starred chef, described it as “a huge honour”.

He added: “What makes it really special is that it has been awarded because of feedback from our customers.”

The judges said: “Dishes such as squid, dressed in horseradish juice, Texel lamb with turnip and mint. and cake made from chicory root and blackcurrant, can be found on the menu, which promises a combination of amazing fresh produce straight from the garden, alongside special things that have been preserved from previous seasons.”

The Banks family have lived and farmed in Oldstead for generations, and their website reads: “There’s an ‘Oldstead’ style; plenty of tradition and culture, cut through with a modern, earthy exuberance.”

Set on 2½ acres of land, virtually all of the restaurant’s fruit and vegetables are grown on-site, or on their parents’ farm down the road, where back-up beetroot, Jerusalem artichokes and potatoes are available.

The TripAdvisor website describes their restaurant as: “A tantalising trip for the taste buds. This restaurant is truly a box of delights. The flavours, combinations of ingredients and skill in putting together the menu, are joyous.”

But Tommy admitted:  “We had no idea what we were doing when we first took over, and we’d just invite our mates round to get drunk.”

The Fat Duck, in London, was 12th on the list, giving the UK three in the top 20.

Spain has two top-10 restaurants, fifth-placed Martín Berasategui, and Girona’s Celler de Can Roca, in 10th spot.
