Tenerife 92 Gran Canaria 71

HOW do you close your team’s most successful year in decades? Iberostar Tenerife provided the answer with a resounding win against their local island rivals.

Gran Canaria were sent back home shell-shocked after Tenerife recorded a 92-71 scoreline in front of a 5,161 crowd at their La Laguna stadium.

By the halfway point, Tenerife were flying at 55-30, thanks to first quarters of 26-18, and 29-12, and achieved without Polish star Mateusz Ponitka, still not quite fit after an injury lay-off.

The pace slackened a little in the final quarters with 18-15, and 19-26 totals, but it was still a bit of a hiding.

Davin White led the charge with 23 points, Javi Beiran adding 16 and Mike Tobey 15. That pushes Tenerife up to sixth in Spain’s top league, and it’s a good launch-pad for the second half of the season.

It was the perfect response, a few days after Tenerife suffered a rare defeat, away to Madrid’s Fuenlabrada.

Without Ponitka, they slipped to a 79-68 loss, despite sterling resistance from New Yorker Mike Tobey, with 24 points, and captain Nico Richotti’s 21.

The third quarter was their downfall, the home side winning it 20-14. The other quarters were closer at 13-11, 23-21, and 23-22 in the final section.
