Crash kills pensioner, who wasn’t wearing a seat-belt

A LOCAL man, aged 66, from the La Palma town of Tajiya, died after being involved in a head-on collision last Sunday.
The pensioner wasn’t wearing a seat belt when the incident happened, in the El Paso municipality that afternoon on the LP-2 and the LP-3, the junction where the two main roads merge.
At the time of the accident, for reasons unknown, the elderly man did not have his seat belt on when drove his Toyota Hilux into the oncoming lane and crashed into a Citroen Berlingo.
Fortunately, the people inside that car were relatively unscathed. But, on impact, the 66-year-old was thrown from his car.
Sadly, he died almost immediately, after suffering a heart attack, which meant that when the emergency ambulance team arrived, there was nothing they could do for him.
A 73-year-old man in the Berlingo had a minor leg injury, while his companion, a 69-year-old woman, experienced bruising.
They were taken to a nearby health centre, where the man was treated for his injuries, and the woman was checked over.
The dead man was identified as J.R.P.G, who was seen earlier in the afternoon, driving erratically in his Toyota, around the area where the accident occurred.
The Guardia Civil were first at the scene to assist with the collision.
