New CDT coach Joseba checks in

TENERIFE spent little time in announcing their new coach, Joseba Etxeberria, following the rapid departure of sacked Pep Marti.

Joseba, a 40-year-old Basque with a rich playing pedigree, has limited coaching experience, and at a level lower than Tenerife’s league.

The new man started his playing career at Real Sociedad, and soon moved on to play for Athletic Bilbao. Over a 15-year career, he scored some amazing goals for the club before retiring in 2010.

Joseba coached the Bilbao youth teams at four levels, before becoming CD Baskonia coach in 2016.

This season, Joseba took the reins at Amorebieta, also in Segunda B, which is one step down from CDT, but they are currently in the bottom half of their regional section.

Pep Marti´s critics pointed to his lack of experience, because he hadn’t ever coached, not even at youth level. His closeness age to some of Tenerife’s senior players was also seen as a problem.

Joseba must win the players’ trust, while keeping a certain detachment, so that he can crack the whip on their poor attitude of recent weeks.

It’s a tough job, with little margin for error, and relegation is a distinct possibility if results don’t improve quickly.

Initially, Joseba is here until the end of the season, when his position will be reviewed.
