Bouncing out of court

Basketball

TXUS Vidorretta, Iberostar Tenerife’s returning coach, has plenty of work to do, as two of his prized overseas players have left the club.

It means that quality replacements are top of his shopping list, even though Tai Odiase, 22, is the lesser blow, because the Nigerian American, who arrived last season from Chicago, struggled to make an impact.

The bigger concern is the loss of Polish star Mateusz Ponitka, who topped the scoring regularly during an impressive season, after arriving from Turkish league Pinar.

The 24-year-old, dominant player, has triggered a release clause in his contract and is heading for Moscow to play for Lokomotiv Kuban.

The get-out clause means that his new team will have to pay Tenerife compensation, estimated to be between 50,000 and 100,000 euros.

But his loss is still a big blow because he was a fans’ favourite. As well as his success at club level, Mateusz is a regular with the Poland national team.
