Big-game hunters all geared up to test San Miguel waters again

SAN MIGUEL Marina will next month host a big-game fishing World Cup qualifier for the second year running. The Bertram Championship, featuring 30 boats, takes place from 12th-14th July and is a qualifier for the World Cup in Costa Rica, which will have 30 entrants. Tenerife is regarded as one of the best areas in the world to fish for marlin and large swordfish, especially off the San Miguel coast. And all fish caught are returned to the sea. San Miguel has the only Tenerife marina capable of hosting a fishing event of this magnitude because of its facilities, its strategic location concerning the trade winds and being near the west of Tenerife. Also the waters, that are usually calm, are strategically placed, about 90 minutes from La Gomera and three hours from Gran Canaria, which opens up a lot of fishing opportunities for competitors. This tournament is being organised by San Miguel Marina, Bertram and IGFA (International Game Fishing), with the backing of Tenerife Tourism, the Aguamarina Golf Hotel, Cicar, Gold and Axa. There are also numerous Tenerife sponsors, all playing their part towards making it another successful sporting event for the Island.
