AENA honours pledge to build new South terminal

Local 3SPANISH Airports operator AENA has fulfilled its promise with the Canarian Government and Tenerife Cabildo to invest in the South Airport with a new terminal.

It has been mooted for years and the final proposal, referred to in the Regulation Aeroportuaria Document (DORA), will reveal a much lower budget than thought.

The initial outlay will be 33.3m euros compared with the 120m stated by Acting Minister Ana Pastor when she visited the island last November.

However AENA, will stump up the cash between now and 2019,  spending a total of 126.3m euros. Of that sum, 45m will go to link the two existing terminals via a new building.

The construction will take place from 2017 and the terminal will be operational in 2021.

The work will comprise two buildings connected with the implementation of an area between 16,000-18,000sq/m, which will, in turn, allow greater capacity to the airfield – one of the main Cabildo’s demands.

As for the initial proposal for a new terminal costing just 33.3m euros, AENA said financing of the total funds was regulated. And, since the action is valid until 2021, its strategic investment will be spread over the five years.
