30th anniversary of air tragedy

The island government has of course never forgotten the tragedy and two minutes silence was held at 17.06 as a sign of respect for all those who died.

The President of the islands Adan Martin, together with a sizeable group of regional politicians attended the memorial ceremony which was held in the Tenerife auditorium and further ceremonies were held at different points of the island throughout the day.

Furthermore Jan Groenewoud a Dutch businessman who lost relatives in the disaster formed the “Fundacion de Familiares de Victimas del Accidente Aereo de Los Rodeos” to bring together the families of the victims at the beginning of 2002 and a couple of weeks ago an eighteen metre high  monument known as the staircase to heaven was unveiled to form a permanent memorial to the victims.

The Foundation organised a charter flight was organised to enable the families of the KLM victims to come to the island for the anniversary ceremony. The flight landed last week and the guests have been staying in a hotel in La Orotava over the last seven days. The Foundation also managed to localise the families of American victims and some of the passengers who survived the accident.

It must be pointed out that since 1977 the installations of Los Rodeos airport have undergone a dramatic change and the airport, which lost popularity with the tour operators for many years is now being used by a large number of companies from all over the world.
