Tougher restrictions on smoking to be imposed.

Apart from limiting smokers to specially designated areas while at work, the new regulations would ban smoking in health, teaching, sports and cultural centres.Restaurants and public places would have to indicate whether or not smoking was allowed.  Fines ranging from 30 to 600,000 euros would be imposed for breaches depending on the seriousness of the offence.Selling cigarettes to under-18s would be prohibited along with sales in public, health, educational, cultural and sports centres as well as leisure facilities for minors.Press, TV and radio publicity, free promotions and sponsorship of public events would be taboo.The new regulations are intended to come into force on January 1st 2006.
