And Dr Folla. who explains how going to the dentist is not a traumatic experience, has some advice for those who have always feared the dentist!
“Unfortunately a large section of the general population avoids the dentist because of fear,” he says. “ This all-too-common ‘dental phobia’ prevents people from receiving necessary, routine dental care, potentially compromising the health and functionality of their mouth and smile.
“If some people have a fear of the dentist, we want them to understand they are not alone - and that there is help. With conscious sedation, we help individuals suffering from severe dental phobia receive the care they need.”
But what is conscious sedation? Dr Folla spells it out, saying: “This form of dentistry allows you to enter a state of relaxation while staying awake during the procedure.
“Although you won't feel any pain, you'll be able to respond to your dentist's questions and commands.!
He adds: “It is important to explain that sedative dentistry is also very helpful for people who have a low tolerance for pain, have very sensitive teeth, can't sit still in the dentist's chair or need a large amount of dental work done at once.”
Dental implants are more common today, but why should we consider them? Dr Folla says: “It is important to know that a tooth loss can affect people at any point in their lives. If you have suffered from tooth loss or damage, it is highly likely you are an appropriate candidate for dental implants.
“Compared with other conventional treatments, like dentures, bridges and crowns, dental implants are more successful and last much longer.
“Dental implants are a simple, secure and permanent solution to substitute missing teeth by replacing the natural root of a lost tooth or teeth with a titanium implant, upon which new crowns and bridgeworks can be carefully placed.
“Remember, placing an implant is often easier than taking a tooth out and is usually done using a simple local anaesthetic.
“You will not feel any pain at the time but, just like after an extraction, you may feel some discomfort during the week after the surgery.”
