TOTAL BLACKOUT IN TENERIFE, THE SECOND ISLAND-WIDE POWER CUT IN LESS THAN A YEAR
At around 9:45 the whole island of Tenerife had a total blackout and currently (12:45) there are still many areas that do not have power. Red Eletrica has reported that they have restored power back to 20% of the island but they are working on generators to restore more power.
Approximately 950,000 people have been affected and the issue is being worked on by Endesa and Red Eléctrica Española. The two companies are already meeting with the energy department of the Government of the Canary Islands to analyze what happened, the causes of which are unknown at the moment.
This is the second “energy zero”, as this type of blackouts is known, which Tenerife has suffered in less than a year, after that of last September 29, which lasted almost nine hours.
A month ago, the Government of the Canary Islands issued millions of fines for this incident, which originated in the Granadilla de Abona substation: one of almost 30 million euros to Red Eléctrica de España and another of 10 million euros to Endesa, considering both companies co-responsible for various serious and very serious offences.
