Insurance pays out €7.3 million for damages in 2019 Gran Canaria fire
The Mapfre insurer has allocated a total of 7.3 million euros in compensation for the damage caused to the insured assets and infrastructure owned by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria in the devastating fire that occurred on the island in August 2019.
This was stated after the company concluded the "complex assessment work for the very serious damage " that the fire generated on the island since Mapfre has been the insurer of the island council for more than 15 years, according to Mapfre in a press release.
In this fire, the company also attended to 32 other policyholders who suffered damages of various consideration for this "serious event" that occurred on August 10th, 2019 in the Paraje de las Peñas, while on August 17th another was declared in the Valleseco municipality, globally becoming a "large-scale" forest fire where more than 11,000 hectares within a 100-kilometre perimeter were affected and was finally extinguished on September 26th.
Finally, the insurer pointed out that in addition to the fire last summer, Mapfre treated the forest fires that occurred in 2007 and 2017 on the island, which also caused millions in damages.
