New Gran Canaria film studio on schedule for 2021
A boost for the film industry on the Canary Islands is underway with a new 21,000 square metre studio that is currently under construction. It is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2020, start of 2021 and to be operational mid way through 2021.
The site will include two soundstages of 1,200 and 1,800 square metres with built in lighting and scene bridges. There will also be workshops, storage areas, meeting rooms and areas for hair, makeup and wardrobe.
This new development will be a huge asset to the canary Islands that has become a very popular filming location over recent years, with the Netflix drama the Witcher filmed in La Palma and Gran Canaria and Marvels new blockbuster the Eternals staring Angelina Jolie filmed in Fuerteventura.
The works of the film and television sets promoted by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria are progressing at a good pace and will place the island "at the forefront of national cinema, as they are public sets built expressly for audiovisual productions", the Corporation has indicated in a release.
The modern Production Centre will not only help to boost the current film industry on the islands but will help to respond to the need for feature films, series and television programs, documentaries and advertising, for the It is crucial to have a suitable place to shoot indoors.
Due to the lower rates of Coronavirus in the Islands the film industry has already returned to start filming here with HBOs first Danish production Kamikaze being filmed throughout August.
