25 immigrants intercepted near Lanzarote, 5 test positive for COVID-19
An inflatable speedboat with 25 sub-Saharan passengers on board was intercepted yesterday, five kilometres east of Lanzarote by Maritime rescue.
The boat was taken to the Naos dock in Arrecife, where it was found that the travellers (21 men including 3 minors, and 4 women), all appeared to be in good health according to CECOES medical staff.
The immigrants, in custody of the National Police, were transferred to the Aula de la Naturaleza de Máguez, a building under direction of the Cabildo, where they will be kept for the next few days before being taken to the Argana ship in Arrecife, which is being used for quarantine of immigrants.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become protocol that all arrivals to the Islands in this way, undergo testing for the coronavirus.
Of this group, 5 adults have tested positive but are all asymptomatic, according to sources from the Doctor José Molina Orosa hospital in Arrecife.
When confirmed, these will be the first cases of coronavirus in Lanzarote since the last person was given the all clear over a week ago making the island Covid free.
