Dr Janet Anscombe, who works to facilitate the integration of British nationals in Tenerife, has been awarded an MBE for services to the British Community in Tenerife, as published today, Friday 9th October 2020.

Having lived in Tenerife for 15 years, Janet has dedicated her retirement to supporting and informing British nationals living on and visiting the island, through her website, blog and social media.

She has been an invaluable partner to the British consulate on the island, acting as a reliable conduit to enable them get important messages to the harder to reach members of the community. Since the 2016 Referendum, she has been especially proactive in highlighting the importance of steps to take to ensure citizens’ rights.

HMA Hugh Elliott said: “I know from colleagues in Tenerife how valued Janet is by the British community in Tenerife, many describing her as their ‘guru’ and ‘go-to’ person. Our consulates rely on individuals like Janet, who give up their time and energy to support and inform their fellow British nationals. We, and the Tenerife community, are lucky to have her.”

Janet herself said: “This is a great honour and a complete and lovely surprise. I've always been glad to be able to help people navigate their lives in Tenerife, and especially in recent years through some very difficult and uncertain times for many, and to get such recognition in addition is really wonderful.”

During the coronavirus pandemic, Janet has been a regular guest on British radio station Oasis Fm, with Chris Elkington, the MD of EmCan Media and editor of Canarian Weekly, who added: “It’s great to see that Janet has deservedly been recognised for her time, passion, and commitment to the community. In these days of instant media and social networks, she provides a valuable service, particularly to the older age group who can find getting the correct information frustrating.”
