From next Monday, September 21st, the central Government will distribute a total of 15 million masks, through the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and social entities, of which 688,000 will be here in the Canary Islands.

The aim is to support local entities and the neediest families, coinciding with the opening of the school year. Specifically, the delegations and sub-delegations of the Government will distribute almost 12,000,000 masks to the municipalities, and the rest will be distributed to the Red Cross, Cáritas and the Spanish Committee of Representatives of People with Disabilities (CERMI), which in turn, will distribute them among the neediest groups.

This announcement comes after the meeting held this afternoon (Wednesday) between the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, and the Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function, Carolina Darias, with representatives of the FEMP.

The reinforcement of coordination with local entities is one of the four measures included in the package of coordinated actions of public health, agreed by the autonomous communities within the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (SNS) on September 9th.

As has been observed during the pandemic, the active participation of city councils and local entities in the promotion and protection of public health is essential. As the Ministry of Health has said since the beginning of the pandemic, they have informed the public, facilitating compliance with prevention measures by citizens, and very importantly, supporting the most vulnerable people facing the social consequences of the crisis.
